Cthulhu

"There lay great CTHULHU and his hordes, hidden in green slimy vaults and sending out at last, after cycles incalculable, the thoughts that spread fear to the dreams of the sensitive and called imperiously to the faithful to come on a pilgrimage of liberation and restoration."
10th in my Lovecraft series, the master of R'lyeh and great dreamer. Originally he was the 3rd piece I started. I really wanted to change the visual approach on him, so first of all I tried to push the transluscency look to the limit. Deep sea life looks more alien than most movie aliens to me, so I wanted to stick to that concept very badly and I think the result was worth it. I wanted his insides to look alien as well, forcing the viewer to really anticipate on whats going on with this creature. Is it just a digestive system or is there more? And finally, to set him apart from many other concepts, the wings. I wanted those wings to be ridiculously huge. Almost as if reality could bend to them once they start to strike. As it happens in the story of The Call of Cthulhu, paople would experience strange and horrific dreams and visions all over the world, heralding the awakening of the Great Old One. This is symbolized in this illustration by a swirl of white matter consisting yellowish sparks - which in turn take very particular shapes - in fact, the shapes of horrified human faces.
