Inspired by the Havamal, a collection of sayings and wisdom that is said to have been written by Odin, which also includes Odins rune poem. The painting depicts a nordic winter landscape, along with a rope on which Odin hung himself upside down, after piercing himself with his spear, for nine days and nine nights in order to learn the runes, magic and find wisdom among the dead. A look through the rope reveals the rune poem carved into a majestic hill. Being a sucker for atmospheric landscapes and a big fan of surrealism, I tried to capture both in one illustration, by putting in little supernatural or hidden imagery for the viewer to detect. For example, the painting is sprinkled with all sorts of hints that refer to Odin, besides just the obvious rope. Maybe he is even in there himself?
